"Non-Ideological" President was Socialist New Party Member in 1996
In the 1990s, a socialist party called The New Party established by the Democratic Socialists of America was active in Chicago and Illinois. They endorsed a number of candidates in the 1996 election in Illinois, including their party member Barack H. Obama. This party acted to push the Democrat Party to become more thoroughly socialist by supporting strongly socialist candidates in the Democrat primaries. Obama was running unopposed for the Illinois Senate seat he had managed to get all other Democrat candidates disqualified for in 1996. This New Party member won the Democrat primary and the election.
